Vesicoureteral Reflux

The urine flows in the wrong direction. Instead of travelling from the kidneys through the ureters into the bladder and from there to the outside, it is pressed back — upward, against the natural current. What the body has already let go of returns. What should have been excreted rises again and threatens the organs that filter and purify it.

Medically, vesicoureteral reflux is a malfunction at the junction of the bladder and ureter — the valve meant to prevent backflow isn't closing properly. In children it is often congenital; in adults it is frequently the result of chronic inflammation or changes in pressure. The consequences can be serious: recurring urinary tract infections, kidney damage, chronic pain.
