Prolonged Birth Process

Also known as: protracted labour · long labour · delayed contractions · birth arrest · prolonged expulsion phase · above-average long labour · uterine inertia
Your Body Is Speaking
A birth that drags on. Hour after hour passes, the contractions are working, but the child does not come. The mother's body pushes, the cervix opens — and yet something stays stuck. Medically there are various explanations: weak contractions, an unfavourable position of the baby, a narrow birth canal. And sometimes no clear physical cause can be found. Everything seems ready — and yet the transition is delayed.
The psychosomatic perspective asks a different question. Not: what is not working? But: what does not want to arrive here? What in this process — on the child's side, the mother's, or both — hesitates before the next step?
A prolonged birth process is not simply a technical problem, but a threshold moment in which the depth of the resistance to a fundamental transition becomes visible.
