Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is the disease of slow wasting. Not a thunderclap, but a smouldering. You cough, you sweat at night, you lose weight even though you eat. The lungs — where life is supposed to flow in and out freely — become the site of an internal combustion. The old physicians called it consumption — and the word hits the mark: a person who diminishes. Who becomes less. Who consumes themselves.
