Your Body Is Speaking
It often begins unnoticed. A hand moves to the head, to the eyebrows, to the eyelashes — and pulls. Not by accident, not out of boredom, but with a strange urgency that cannot be explained. The impulse is stronger than the will. You know you are doing it. You know you do not want to. And yet it happens — again and again, often in moments when you least expect it.
Medically, trichotillomania is classified as an impulse control disorder. The hands reach into one's own hair and pull it out — scalp hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, sometimes body hair. What remains are bald patches, shame, and the feeling of having lost control of your own body. From a psychosomatic perspective, a different question arises: what does your body express through this gesture that you cannot express in words? Why does your hand reach for something that belongs to you — and tears it out?
