Tracheitis
12 min read
Also known as: tracheal inflammation · inflammation of the trachea · inflamed trachea · tracheal infection · inflammation of the trachea · pain behind the sternum · sore trachea · burning in the trachea
Your Body Is Speaking
Your trachea is burning. Not from the outside — from within. The mucous membrane that normally keeps this channel soft and supple is irritated, swollen, inflamed. You cough — dry, barking, sometimes so forcefully that your chest aches. The voice grows hoarse, breathing feels as though the air is passing over raw tissue. Medically, tracheitis is an inflammation of the tracheal mucous membrane, usually triggered by viruses or bacteria. Treatment targets the pathogen and the inflammation.
