Breech Position

Normally, a child turns in the last weeks before birth with its head facing down — ready to touch the world forehead-first, to dive headlong into life. In a breech position, that does not happen. The child remains inverted. It sits instead of diving. It hesitates at the threshold.

Medically, this is treated as a positional anomaly — with external cephalic version, planned interventions, risk assessments. And of course that matters. A child must come into the world safely. But there is a level that is rarely discussed in delivery rooms: What does it mean when a being lingers at the border between two worlds? When it does not turn around, does not move into the starting position, does not take the leap?

The breech position is not a defect, but a pause — a moment of deep ambivalence at the threshold of being here.
