Your Body Is Speaking

Your muscles no longer obey you. They contract without your wanting them to — uncontrolled, persistent, painful. Movements that come naturally to others become a battle against your own body. The hand reaches out but won't open again. The leg moves, but it doesn't follow your will. Your body is there — but it is not free.

Medically, spasticity is a motor disorder caused by damage to the brain or spinal cord. The muscles receive faulty signals and lock into continuous tension. There are clear neurological causes — stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain injury, cerebral palsy. Medicine describes the mechanism. But it doesn't answer the question that lies beneath the mechanism: What is this body trying to show you — beyond the neurology?
