Your Body Is Speaking

A bite, a sip, maybe just your own saliva — and suddenly everything takes the wrong route. Instead of going into the esophagus, it slides into the trachea. The body responds immediately: a coughing fit, tears in the eyes, the feeling of having no air, a moment of naked panic. For a fraction of a second you think: I'm choking.

Medically, this is a swallowing reflex that briefly failed. The epiglottis, which normally closes the trachea when you swallow, was not fast enough. This happens to every person now and then. But when it happens more frequently — when it becomes a recurring pattern — a second look is worth taking. Because the body does nothing for nothing.
