Sepsis

Something inside has gone out of control. The body burns, fever rises, thoughts blur, circulation falters. What medicine calls sepsis is a situation in which an infection no longer stays local but seizes the entire system. Pathogens that should have remained in one place have breached the protective wall and are circulating through the bloodstream. The immune response reacts with a storm that ultimately strikes not only the invaders but damages the organism itself.
