Tendon Shortening

Also known as: contracture · shortened tendons · tendon retraction · tendon shrinkage · stiff tendons · restricted range of motion · shortening syndrome

Your Body Is Speaking

Tendons are the quiet connectors in your body. They are the link between muscle and bone — between force and structure, between movement and stability. A healthy tendon can do both: hold on and let go, tighten and stretch. It is both strong and elastic. That balance is its very nature.

When tendons shorten, you lose range. The foot no longer fully extends. The hand no longer opens completely. The arc that sets you in motion becomes narrower. It pulls, it strains, it no longer stretches the way it used to. You notice it when getting up, when walking, when reaching — movements that were once effortless have become a negotiation. Medically, we speak of contractures, of fibrosis, of connective tissue remodeling. That describes what is happening — but not yet why it is happening in you, now, at this point in your life.
