Your Body Is Speaking
In sleep, your breath stops. Not for fractions of a second — for long, unsettling moments in which the oxygen in your blood drops, your heart has to beat faster, your brain sends out an emergency signal that half-rips you from sleep. Then you gasp for air, snore up, sink back into an exhaustion you never truly emerge from. In the morning you get up as though you had been fighting — not sleeping. The day drags, concentration crumbles, and somewhere in your chest sits a tiredness that reaches deeper than any sleep deprivation.
Medically, sleep apnea syndrome is a serious illness. The airways collapse during sleep, the body is undersupplied, the cardiovascular system is burdened over time. Sleep laboratory, CPAP mask, medical accompaniment — all of this has its firm place and its justification.
