Schistosomiasis of the intestine — in English-speaking countries also known as bilharzia — is a parasitic disease. Tiny blood flukes that penetrate the skin on contact with contaminated freshwater travel through the body and eventually settle in the veins surrounding the intestine and abdominal cavity. There they lay eggs that migrate through the tissue, trigger inflammation, and can cause bleeding, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and exhaustion over years.
