Scarlet Fever

Your child is burning. The throat is fire-red, the fever is rising, and the skin is covered with a fine, rough rash that feels like sandpaper. Later the skin peels in thin strips — as if the body were shedding an old layer. Medically, scarlet fever is a bacterial infection caused by streptococci that primarily affects children. Antibiotics fight the pathogen, and that is a good thing.

But there is a question that goes beyond the pathogen: Why now? Why this child? In the same class sit twenty children exposed to the same bacteria — and only some fall ill. The psychosomatic perspective does not ask about the pathogen. It asks about the fertile ground. And that fertile ground tells a story about safety, security, and the courage to show feelings freely.
