Quincke's Oedema

A swelling that forms in minutes. The face becomes unfamiliar in the mirror. The lips grow thick, the eyes disappear behind puffy lids, the tongue presses against the palate. Sometimes it stays there — and sometimes the swelling travels further, into the throat, into the larynx, and then it becomes tight. Very tight. And suddenly it is no longer just a skin reaction, but about breathing.

Quincke's oedema is not an ordinary allergy, but a sudden, massive accumulation of fluid in the subcutaneous tissue, triggered by a system that has fallen out of balance. Medically there are many explanations: an allergic reaction, a medication, a hereditary form, an unknown trigger. But the actual question the symptom poses stands behind the trigger question: why does something break through now, at precisely this point?
