Your Body Is Speaking

You cough — and something comes. Mucus, thick or fluid, loosens itself from the depths of your airways and is carried upward. Medically, this is a good sign: the body is clearing up, transporting away, cleansing itself. A productive cough is considered the "useful" cough — the cough with a result.

But if you are honest, it does not feel useful. It feels like excess that has no place. Like something heavy and viscous that has grown inside you and is now looking for an exit — not because you are consciously releasing it, but because it is forcing its own way out. You cough it up, wipe it away, and it comes back. And back. And back.

With coughing in general the theme is the push — the protest, the eruption. With a dry cough it is the emptiness — the struggle without result. With a productive cough the theme is different: here something comes out. But it comes out the wrong way.
