The portal vein is the central blood vessel that transports nutrient-rich blood from the entire digestive tract to the liver. It is a bottleneck — a needle's eye through which everything must pass that you absorb, digest, and process. When the pressure in this system rises and the blood can no longer flow freely, it backs up. Varicose veins in the esophagus, a swollen abdomen, an overloaded spleen — the consequences are serious.
