Onchocerciasis — commonly known as river blindness — is a parasitic disease triggered by tiny filarial worms. They are transmitted by blackflies that live near fast-flowing rivers. The worm migrates through connective tissue, forms nodules under the skin, causes intense itching, skin changes — and in the most severe cases can destroy the eyes. In the affected regions of West Africa, the disease is one of the most common causes of blindness.
