Medically, the matter is simply explained: cerumen is a protective substance. It binds dust, keeps bacteria at bay, moistens the sensitive skin of the ear canal. Normally it migrates outward on its own. Sometimes, however, it doesn't. Sometimes the body produces more than it can shed. Sometimes what should remain supple hardens. Sometimes protection becomes a wall.
