Necrotising Fasciitis

It often begins harmlessly — a small wound, a scratch, an inconspicuous injury. And then something happens that shatters all proportion: bacteria invade and begin destroying the tissue beneath the skin. Fascia, muscles, fatty tissue — everything is attacked, dissolved, annihilated. The pain is brutal, disproportionate, often far worse than the visible wound would suggest. The skin discolours, swells, dies. It is as though the body were dissolving itself from within.

Medically, necrotising fasciitis is an absolute emergency. Without immediate surgical and antibiotic treatment, it is life-threatening. That is beyond question, and nothing in this text is meant to distract from it.
