Nail Plate Detachment

A nail is a tiny protective shield. It sits firmly on the nail bed — anchored, connected, an organic whole. And then it begins to loosen. Not to break, not to splinter — but to lift. The outer layer separates from the ground beneath it. What should belong together loses its connection.

Medically this is called onycholysis. It is triggered by fungi, medications, thyroid problems, injuries, nail polish — a long list of possible physical factors. And each of these causes can be real.
