Umbilical Hernia in Babies

It is a small bulge that appears at your baby's navel — soft, sometimes barely visible, sometimes more pronounced, especially when it cries, coughs, or strains. Umbilical hernias in newborns are common and medically almost always harmless. In the vast majority of cases, the gap in the abdominal wall closes on its own within the first years of life. Pediatricians watch, reassure, and rarely intervene.

And yet a question remains open — one that goes beyond anatomy: Why does this spot close without difficulty in some babies, and not in others? Why does it appear precisely there, at the place where the connection to the mother was severed, that an opening persists and refuses to close completely?
