It often begins insidiously. A twitch in the fingers you cannot control. Movements that suddenly appear uncoordinated — as though your body were doing things you didn't order. Then come the changes in mood, in thinking, in behaviour. Irritability, withdrawal, forgetfulness. At some point the diagnosis: Huntington's disease — a genetically determined, progressive condition of the brain.
Medically, this involves a gene defect on chromosome 4 that leads to the gradual breakdown of specific nerve cells. The movement disorders, the behavioural changes, the cognitive decline — all of it can be described biochemically. The psychosomatic perspective does not offer a counter-diagnosis. But it asks more deeply: what does this symptom reveal about the inner experience? What is this body saying — even when its path seems genetically predetermined?
