Your hand is closing. Slowly, imperceptibly at first — a small nodule in the palm, barely noticed. Then, over months or years, fingers draw together, bend inward, until one day they can no longer be straightened. The hand that should grasp becomes a fist that can no longer open.
Medically, Morbus Dupuytren is a connective tissue disorder. Fibrous cords thicken in the palm and shorten until they lock the fingers permanently in a bent position. The cause is considered unclear — genetic factors, age, certain lifestyle habits. Viewed psychosomatically, a different question arises: why is your hand closing? What are you holding on to — so cramped, so stubbornly, that your body can no longer open its fist?
