Pity

9 min read

Also known as: feeling sorry · commiseration · belittling sympathy · pity trap · helper pattern.

Your Body Is Speaking

You see someone who is struggling — sick, lonely, failed, at rock bottom — and your heart contracts. You want to help. You want them to feel better. And in that moment you sense something that feels like love: pity. A warm, soft pull drawing you toward them.

And yet: something is off. The people you feel this way about don't get better. Some react with distance. Some become irritable. Some even turn away. And you stand there with your soft heart and ask yourself: why am I getting back what I never sowed — resistance, impatience, aggression?

The answer is uncomfortable, but clear. Pity is not the same as compassion. The two wear similar clothes, but they come from two entirely different houses. And your body — your nervous system, your relationships, your entire surroundings — registers the difference long before your mind grasps it.
