Mastosis

8 min read

Also known as: Fibrocystic mastopathy · breast dysplasia · mammary dysplasia · nodular-cystic breast changes · mastopathia fibrosa cystica.

Your Body Is Speaking

The breasts become sensitive. Even the lightest touch is uncomfortable, sometimes painful. You feel nodules, small densifications, cysts that come and go. In the days before menstruation the tissue swells, becomes hard, pulls, burns. Then, after the bleeding, much of it recedes — not completely, but noticeably. A cycle of tension and release that plays out month after month.

Medicine calls this fibrocystic mastopathy or mastosis: a hormone-dependent, benign change in glandular tissue. Very common. In many women in middle life. Not dangerous in the conventional sense — and yet impossible to ignore. A body part that speaks, and precisely where femininity, nourishing, giving, and receiving have their symbolic place.

The question that arises is not only hormonal. But rather: what is settling here? What is hardening in a tissue that is actually meant to be soft, warm, and receptive?
