Stage Fright / Performance Anxiety

Also known as: performance anxiety · audition anxiety · presentation anxiety · exam nerves · pre-performance nervousness · fear of public speaking · podium anxiety · stage fright · blackout in front of an audience

Your Body Is Speaking

Your heart races, your hands go damp, your stomach tightens. Your voice grows thin, your knees weak, your mouth dry. Your entire body switches to alarm — as though a real danger were approaching. And yet you are simply standing in front of people. You want to say something, show something, present something. Nothing life-threatening. And yet your system reacts as though survival itself were at stake.

Medically, stage fright is a stress response: the sympathetic nervous system fires, adrenaline floods the body, the fight-or-flight reaction kicks in. But why? You are not being attacked. No one is threatening your life. The stage is not a battlefield — and yet your body treats it like one.

Stage fright is not a nerve problem. It is the voice of a person who does not allow themselves to simply be themselves.
