Nodules (Noduli)

A nodule is small. No catastrophe, no dramatic event, no symptom that tears you out of daily life. It is a small hardening, a densification beneath the skin, on a tendon, on a vocal cord, in the ear, in breast tissue, in a muscle strand. You feel it when you run a finger across it. It is there. It is small. And it stays.

From a medical standpoint, a nodule is a circumscribed tissue change — well-demarcated, palpable, often rounded. The causes are varied: friction, chronic irritation, inflammatory processes, hormonal influences, genetic predispositions. In most cases it is harmless. But it is also not nothing. It is a statement from the tissue: at this point something has contracted. At this point something was encapsulated. At this point the system decided: here is where it stops — we close the door and exclude this area.
