A Lump in the Throat

There is something in your throat that shouldn't be there. No bite of food, no foreign body — nothing a doctor could see on a screen. And yet it's there. A pressure, a tightness, a constriction, as though someone were squeezing your throat from the inside. Swallowing becomes conscious. Breathing becomes tight. Speaking suddenly takes effort. You reach for your throat because something is closing in there that has no physical cause — and that is exactly what makes it so unsettling.

Medicine calls it globus sensation — a foreign-body feeling in the throat without an organic finding. Reflux, the thyroid, muscular tension around the larynx are examined, sometimes found, often not. But even when an organic trigger is present, one question remains open: Why there? Why now? What is constricting your throat — not anatomically, but in your life?
