Your Body Is Speaking

The doors close. The elevator jolts into motion. The MRI tube encircles your body. The subway stops between two stations. And then it happens: your breathing becomes shallow, your heart starts to race, a film of sweat settles over your skin, and inside your head a voice screams that will tolerate no contradiction — get out, right now, at any cost. The walls seem to move. The space contracts. You feel the air growing thinner, even though it isn't. You're convinced you're about to suffocate, even though there's no medical reason for it.
