Your Body Is Speaking

It lasts a second, perhaps two. A shiver runs up your back, crawls up your neck, raises the hairs. You are still mid-sentence, mid-thought, mid-glance at something — and your body has already responded. Before you have understood what is happening. Before your mind has placed the scene. Your body knew it faster.

Medically, the cold shiver is a stress response of the autonomic nervous system. Hair follicles contract, fine muscles tighten, the skin becomes briefly cooler, goosebumps form. An ancient protective reaction dating from times when raising one's fur actually achieved something — appearing larger, retaining warmth, sounding an alarm. But this explanation only describes the how. It does not answer the why now, in this moment, in precisely this situation.
