The diagnosis DCIS — ductal carcinoma in situ — is a particular one. It is breast cancer. And it is not quite that yet. A cellular change sits within the milk ducts, in the fine passageways that once carried nourishment for a child toward the nipple. Nothing has yet broken through into the surrounding tissue. Everything still lies within the canal.
Medically, this is good news. DCIS is generally curable, the prognosis is favorable, and oncological treatment — often surgery, sometimes radiation, occasionally anti-hormonal therapy — has high success rates. Your oncology team knows what to do. And it should do what it must.
And at the same time, there is this inner moment in which a word like carcinoma lands on a body one had until now taken for granted. Something shifts. Time grows denser. Questions arise that have nothing to do with cells.
