A pathogen has entered you. A virus, a bacterium, a fungus — something microscopic has found its way through your skin barrier, mucous membranes, or airways and settled inside you. Your body responds: fever, swelling, pain, fatigue. The immune system is running at full capacity. You are ill.
The medical view of this process is clear and well-researched. Pathogens are everywhere. They drift through the air, sit on surfaces, live in water, in soil, in other people. Most of the time, nothing happens. You encounter them a hundred times a day without noticing. But sometimes — right now — one takes hold. And then you ask yourself: Why? Why me? Why today? Why this pathogen?
