An infarction is what happens when a tissue is suddenly cut off from its supply. A vessel closes, the blood can no longer pass through, and what lies beyond — a piece of heart muscle, a section of the brain, part of the lung, a segment of the intestine — begins to die. Medically this is necrosis, a circumscribed tissue death. There is hardly any event in the body more dramatic than this. Something in you has, in the literal sense, died.
Medicine knows a great deal about the biochemical side: blood clots, deposits, arterial calcification, high blood pressure, metabolic burden. All true, all important. And yet a question remains that lies beyond laboratory values: why now? Why precisely at this location? Why has the body closed this one channel — as if it had decided that nothing more should reach this region?
