The brain water that normally circulates in a finely balanced cycle — produced, circulated, and reabsorbed — backs up. Pressure rises. In infants the fontanelle bulges, the head grows beyond its natural measure. In adults the pressure manifests as headaches, nausea, visual disturbances, unsteadiness of gait — the body loses its equilibrium.
