Your Body Is Speaking

Your hip is growing stiff. In the morning you need minutes before the first step no longer hurts. Movement that was once effortless — walking, bending, turning — becomes a negotiation with pain. Medically this is called coxarthrosis: the cartilage in the hip joint breaks down, the joint space narrows, bone grinds on bone. A degenerative change, doctors say. Wear and tear.

But wear and tear doesn't explain why some hips stiffen at thirty while others remain supple at eighty. It doesn't explain why the degeneration often favours one side. And it doesn't explain the feeling many affected people describe: as though life itself were becoming more sluggish, heavier, narrower.
