Your heart beats about one hundred thousand times a day. Most of the time you don't notice it. Then a moment comes — bad news, a glance, a sentence — and suddenly it is there. It pounds. It stumbles. It contracts. Or it opens wide and warm when you see someone you love.

No other organ is mentioned so often in everyday speech. The heart breaks, the heart opens, the heart is heavy, the heart is in the right place. We speak of the heart as if it were not just a pump, but a centre — a place where something happens that goes far beyond blood circulation.

Medicine sees the heart as a highly specialised muscle. That is true. But it is not the whole story. Your heart is also an instrument that responds to everything that affects you emotionally — in real time. It changes rhythm, force, and fill depending on how you feel, who you have before you, what you demand of yourself.
