Also known as: one-sided paralysis · unilateral paralysis · stroke paralysis · half the body paralyzed · hemiplegia · half-sided paresis · right-sided paralysis · left-sided paralysis · half-body paralysis · partial body paralysis

Your Body Is Speaking

One half of the body no longer responds. The arm won't lift when you call it. The leg no longer carries you the way it should. One side of the face obeys; the other has gone silent. What was effortless yesterday — picking up a cup, taking a step, smiling — is today labour, struggle, or no longer possible at all.

Hemiparesis is the partial paralysis of one side of the body. Hemiplegia is the complete form. Both arise most often from an injury to the brain — most commonly through a stroke, less often through bleeding, tumour, trauma, or inflammatory processes. Medically, the picture is clear: a brain region is no longer functional, and the half of the body it controls loses its responsiveness.
