Cutaneous Leishmaniasis

Cutaneous leishmaniasis begins inconspicuously. A small nodule, a red spot, a place that will not heal. Then the change grows — the skin breaks open, forms ulcers, crusts, open patches that persist stubbornly for weeks and months. In the Orient it is called the Oriental sore. Medicine sees a parasite transmitted through sandfly bites. Treatment targets the pathogen.
