Pilonidal Cyst (Sinus Pilonidalis)

It often begins unnoticed — a slight sensation of pressure near the coccyx, a small swelling in the gluteal cleft that you initially ignore. Then the area becomes inflamed. It turns red, hot, painful. Sitting becomes agony. Eventually an abscess forms that must drain — sometimes on its own, sometimes surgically. Medicine explains: hairs have grown under the skin and triggered a chronic inflammation there. A cyst has formed, a hollow space beneath the surface that fills and inflames again and again.

But why exactly there — at the lowest end of the spine, directly above the coccyx, at the foundation of your body? And why this pattern: something grows inward rather than outward. Something that belongs at the surface bores itself into the depths and creates a suppurating cavity there?
