Your blood vessels are contracting. Without warning, the fine arteries go into spasm — especially in the fingers, sometimes in the toes, occasionally elsewhere. The skin turns pale, then bluish, then cold. It hurts. Blood flow stalls, as if your body has decided to cut certain regions off from supply. In Raynaud's syndrome, the most well-known form, the fingers become numb, colourless appendages — as if they no longer belong to you.
