A child comes into the world, and its abdominal wall is not fully closed. A part of the inner organs — intestine, sometimes stomach or liver — lies exposed, unprotected, outside the body. What should be safely held within shows itself already at birth, turned outward. Paediatric surgery can treat this well today, and most children develop completely healthily after the procedure.
