Late-Closing Fontanelle

The fontanelle is one of the most astonishing features of the human body. A soft spot on your newborn's skull — not a defect, but a brilliant design: it enables birth through the narrow birth canal and gives the growing brain room to unfold. Normally this gap in the bone closes on its own within the first one to two years of life. When it remains open longer than expected, parents respond with worry — and pediatricians begin to investigate.

Medically, a delayed fontanelle closure can indicate metabolic disorders, vitamin deficiency, or other physical causes. Medical assessment is important and right. But the psychosomatic perspective raises an additional question — not instead of the medical one, but alongside it: What is expressed through this open gate? What shows itself where the skull has not yet closed?
