Your Body Is Speaking

It usually starts gradually. A mild unease as the plane begins to taxi. A pressure in the stomach at takeoff. Then, as the aircraft climbs and the earth drops away beneath you, it becomes clear: nausea. Sweat on your forehead. Reaching for the paper bag. You sit strapped in, cannot leave, and your body rebels against a state your mind has long since rationally accepted.

Medically, airsickness is explained through the vestibular organ in the inner ear: it reports movement to the brain that your eyes cannot see. Inside a cabin, where the walls stand still while your body is rocked by turbulence, a contradiction arises. The brain interprets this contradiction as poisoning — and triggers the emergency response: nausea, sweating, dizziness, sometimes vomiting. So much for the biology.
