Your Body Is Speaking
Epidemic typhus is one of those diseases that always appears when life has come apart at the seams. War, displacement, camps, homelessness, famine, cramped spaces without water or dignity. Where people are herded together, where bodies can no longer be cared for, where lice multiply — there the pathogen (a small bacterium from the Rickettsia family) finds its way into the human organism. The result is a severe clinical picture: high fever, splitting headaches, muscle pain that reaches into the bones, an exhausted delirium, and then the characteristic skin rash that gave epidemic typhus its name — spots on the skin, as if the body were writing what the soul cannot say.
