Your Body Is Speaking
You unfold the pillow, shake out the duvet, smooth the down jacket flat — and your body begins to rebel. Your nose runs, your eyes water, your skin itches, your breathing tightens. Sometimes a single wisp of down floating through the air is enough, and your system goes on high alert.
Medically, the explanation is quick: certain proteins in feathers and down — often combined with microscopically small mites that settle within them — are read by your immune system as a threat. Histamine is released, mucous membranes swell, the bronchial tubes constrict. An immune reaction against something that is objectively harmless. You know that. And yet it happens.
