Episodic Hearing Difficulties

It comes in waves. Sometimes you hear everything clearly and distinctly — and then, without any recognizable trigger, the world grows quieter. Conversations sound muffled, as if someone has drawn a curtain between you and the sounds. Music loses its sharpness. Voices blur. And then, after hours or days, everything returns. Until it goes again.

From a medical standpoint there are various explanations for fluctuating hearing — from circulatory disturbances in the inner ear to pressure changes. But when the examinations yield nothing definitive, when no degenerative process is behind it and the episodes come and go like tides, then another question is worth asking: What doesn't want to be heard right now? Or more precisely: What is simply too much?

Episodic hearing difficulties are not a defect — they are an emergency switch.
