Epiglottitis

The epiglottis is a small, tongue-shaped piece of cartilage you never notice in everyday life. It sits at the entrance to your windpipe and closes each time you swallow — so that food and liquid glide into the esophagus, not the lungs. A silent guardian. Unobtrusive, precise, vital.

When this guardian becomes inflamed and swells, unobtrusiveness suddenly turns to alarm. Swallowing becomes agony. Breathing becomes tight. The voice changes — muffled, dampened, as though something is smothering the sound before it reaches the mouth. In severe cases — especially in children — the swelling can become so massive that the airways close. Epiglottitis is a medical emergency.
