Diverticulosis

Also known as: diverticula · intestinal pouches · diverticulitis · sigmoid diverticula · colon diverticula · diverticular disease · inflamed diverticula · outpouchings of the intestinal wall

Your Body Is Speaking

The intestinal wall gives way. At spots that should remain stable, small outpouchings form — pouches that protrude outward, like bulges in a tube under too much pressure. Medically, they are called diverticula. They develop mainly in the large intestine, where the body continues processing what has been digested, sorts it, and finally lets it go.

Millions of people carry these outpouchings without knowing it. Only when symptoms appear — a sense of pressure, cramps, irregularities — is the diagnosis made. Medicine points to lack of dietary fibre, connective tissue weakness, physical inactivity. All of that plays a role. But the deeper question is: Why does your body build escape chambers? Why does it create niches where things accumulate that should actually keep flowing?
