The Bartholin glands sit hidden within the tissue of the outer intimate area. Their role is quiet and fundamental: they provide moisture, lubrication, and natural protection. You don't notice them as long as they function. It's only when one becomes blocked, when a cyst forms or inflammation develops — the so-called Bartholinitis — that their existence forces itself painfully into awareness.
Medically, this is explained as a blocked duct. Secretion backs up, the tissue swells, becomes inflamed, can turn into an abscess. Pain, pressure, heat — a local event that occurs in the most intimate part of the body and is often connected to shame. But the deeper question is: What is backing up inside you that finds no way out? Which expression of yourself is blocked?
