Canker Sore (Centre of Mouth)

There it is — that small, open spot right in the middle of your mouth. Inconspicuous, barely larger than a pinhead — and yet it makes itself known like a burning centre. Every bite becomes an obstacle. Every word rubs against it. You suddenly notice how often you swallow, how often your tongue moves to that spot, how much your mouth is a place you normally do not consciously perceive — until it hurts.

Medically, a canker sore is a superficial erosion of the oral mucosa whose exact cause has not yet been fully clarified. Stress, nutritional deficiencies, immune weakness — the usual suspects are named. But why right here, in the middle of the mouth? Why at exactly the place where speech, food, and expression converge?
